When to Stop Using Onesies? A Guide to Two-Piece Sets After 6-Months
Share
For the first months of your baby's life, a onesie or zip-up one-piece can be one of the easiest things to reach for. They're simple, cosy and make those early nappy changes a little more manageable.
But somewhere around the 7 to 10 months mark, your little one starts to change.
They're rolling, crawling, sitting, standing, exploring — and before you know it, they're becoming much more active. This is when a two-piece outfit with a separate top and bottom can start to make everyday dressing more comfortable and practical.
1. More freedom to move
Crawling, rolling, sitting and standing mean your baby is suddenly on the move all day.
A separate top and bottom allows the two pieces to move independently with the body, giving little ones more freedom to crawl, play and explore without one-piece clothing connecting the torso and legs.
Look for soft, stretchy fabrics and comfortable waistbands that move with them.
2. Easier nappy changes
With a two-piece outfit, you don't need to remove the whole outfit for every nappy change.
When you're dealing with a wriggly baby, fewer steps can make a big difference.
3. A little more independence
As babies become toddlers, getting dressed becomes part of learning to do things for themselves.
A separate top and a simple elastic-waist bottom can be easier for little hands to pull up and down than a one-piece outfit. Those small steps help children practise dressing independently.
4. Especially helpful for potty training
When toddlers begin toilet training, they need to learn to pull their clothes down and back up. Easy-to-remove clothing can make this process simpler. No zips, snaps or full-body outfit to manage.
An elastic-waist bottom can also make it easier for toddlers to start taking responsibility for getting dressed again themselves.
Onesies still have their place
You don't need to stop buying onesies altogether.
They're still great for younger babies, sleep, cooler weather and quick changes when you're out.
But as your little one becomes more mobile, two-piece sets give you another practical option designed around how they are growing and moving.
From onesie to two-piece
Around 6 months and beyond, your baby is changing quickly — and their clothing can change with them.
More movement. Easier changes. More independence.
A soft two-piece set can be a simple switch that makes everyday life a little easier for both you and your little one.
At Maru Studio, we look for comfortable baby and toddler clothing made for real everyday moments — from crawling and playing at home to those first steps towards independence.
