What Is Cotton Modal? A Fabric Guide

When choosing clothing for babies and toddlers, the fabric matters just as much as the design. Softness, stretch, breathability and easy care all make a difference when little ones are moving, crawling, playing and growing.

What is cotton modal?

Cotton Modal is a blended fabric made by combining natural cotton fibers with semi-synthetic modal fibers.

For the fabric used in our cotton modal pieces, Lenzing™ Modal is blended with cotton in a 1:1 ratio, helping maintain the exceptionally soft touch of modal while bringing together the familiar comfort and practicality of cotton.

The fabric offers a particularly soft feel against the skin, making it a comfortable choice for everyday baby and toddler wear.

Why is cotton modal so soft?

One of the defining characteristics of cotton modal is its smooth, soft touch.

Modal fibres are known for their smooth surface, from uniform filament structure with less surface friction than natural cotton fibers, while cotton provides structure and breathability. Together, they create a fabric that feels gentle against delicate skin without feeling heavy or stiff.

For little ones, this softness is especially useful in clothing worn close to the body, such as singlets, bodysuits and comfortable loungewear.

Why we love cotton modal for baby and toddler clothing

For us, one of the biggest advantages of cotton modal is the balance between softness, stretch and everyday comfort.

Baby and toddler clothing needs to do more than look good. It needs to feel comfortable against the skin and move easily with growing bodies.

That's why cotton modal works particularly well for pieces designed for everyday wear at home or on the go. Its soft touch, flexible stretch and lightweight feel make it a natural choice for comfortable essentials.

Cotton modal vs. cotton: what's the difference?

While both fabrics can be comfortable choices for baby clothing, they have different characteristics.

Feel and Texture: Cotton has a familiar, structured, and airy handfeel, whereas modal is significantly softer, smoother, and drapes with a silky fluidity.
Moisture Management: Modal absorbs moisture roughly 50% better than cotton by weight and wicks sweat away faster. Cotton absorbs moisture well, but holds onto dampness longer.
Shrinkage and Shape: Modal resists shrinking and retains its shape much better after multiple washes. Standard cotton is prone to shrinking, fading, and stretching out over time.
Durability and Pilling: Modal fibers are stronger and resist pilling better because their fine, long fibers leave fewer loose ends. Lower-grade cotton can wear out and pill faster under friction.

A fabric made for everyday comfort

Choosing children's clothing often comes down to the small details: how soft it feels, how easily it moves, and how well it fits into everyday life.

Cotton modal brings these qualities together in one versatile fabric. With its soft touch, comfortable stretch and practical everyday feel, it's a fabric we love for pieces made to be worn, washed and enjoyed again and again.

At Maru Studio, we look for children's pieces that combine thoughtful fabrics with comfortable designs — everyday clothing that feels as good as it looks.
